Tombeau (literally, ” tombstone”) is traditionally a composition in memory of an important composer or individual; there are many famous examples in music history. This one is dedicated to my long-time friend and colleague, Pat O’Brien, guitarist, lutenist, teacher extraordinaire, and professor of Ancient Instruments and Literature at the Juilliard School in New York. Pat, premiered Tombeau in the early seventies at one of the concerts that I arranged while Artist-in-Residence at Franklin and Marshall College. Tombeau was an important piece for both of us for many years. RIP, Pat! ~ Owen Middleton
