Fast

Fast was composed in 2007 at the request of Richard Provost. He wanted a contrasting work to another, much slower, work I had written for his duo with Alan Goldspiel.  He’d indicated that he wanted a piece that was quick and bright. Fast was its working title, but when the work was completed it seemed to be the best description of the work, so the title remained.

The piece uses a lot meter changes, but the predominant one is 16/8, with a a grouping of 3+6+3+4. While the piece is indeed fast, with an unchanging pulse, I endeavored to work in passages of calm. The work was premiered by Adam Pettit and Connie Sheu in Moreno Valley CA, in 2016.
